The Sugar House Park Authority offers three types of reservation permits to park users: special-event permits, athletic-field reservations, and pavilion reservations, which are the most common.

The specific rules governing each application process are outlined in the applicable reservation forms and permits.

Please note: special-event and athletic-field reservation applications will not be received before January 1 of the year of the event date, and terrace reservations may not be made before March 1.

Following is a description of each type of reservation and the process for a park user to procure a reservation.

Special-Event Permits

Interested parties may apply to hold a “special event” at Sugar House Park; some of the more common “special events” involve the use of the park road by not-for-profit groups for benefit runs or walks.

A “special event” is defined as involving any of the following:

  • 1, the use of an area greater than one terrace and its immediate surrounding area;
  • 2, the closing of any roadway in the park or restricting access to any area of the park during regular park hours; and
  • 3, the necessity for a Salt Lake City Special Events Permit for any “commercially related special event” or “advanced planned free expression activity.”

The fees for a special-event permit at Sugar House Park are as follows:

  • $195 for an event that involves from 0 to 999 people;
  • $500 for an event that involves animals or 1,000 or more people;
  • $90 for each terrace used for a full day (8 a.m. to 10 p.m.);
  • $60 for each terrace used for a half-day (8 a.m. to 2 p.m., or 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.);
  • $60 per terrace for previous-day event setup.
  • The Park Authority will set fees for an event that involves closure of the park road or restricting pedestrian access. Also, a non-refundable $20 fee is charged for each application.

The process for applying for a special-event permit is two-pronged:

  • 1, the applicant should contact Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation 801-483-5473 to obtain a Special Event Request Form for Sugar House Park, fill out the form and return it to County Parks;
  • 2, the applicant also must receive approval from the Sugar House Park Authority Board of Trustees, which requires an appearance before the board at one of its monthly meetings (the applicant must be placed on the board’s agenda prior to the meeting).

The Sugar House Park Authority accepts applications for the use of four athletic fields: the baseball field, near the Mt Olympus Pavilion; the main soccer field, near the Big Field Pavilion; and the Southeast soccer field, near the Sugar Beet Pavilion.

Due to contractual agreements between the Park Authority and the Salt Lake City School District, Highland High School has priority use of the baseball field, the main soccer field and, of course, its own softball field. However, applicants may seek the use of these fields at times when they are not scheduled by Highland.

The fees for reserving athletic fields at Sugar House Park are as follows:

  • for non-profit groups and government organizations, the fee is $12 per hour per field, plus a $20 refundable deposit;
  • for all other groups, the fee is $180 per game, plus a $200 refundable deposit. Also, a $20 non-refundable application fee is required.

The process for applying for an athletic-field permit again is two-pronged:

  • 1, contact Salt Lake County Parks 483-5473 to obtain an Athletic Fields Reservation Request Form for Sugar House Park, complete the form and return it to County Parks;
  • 2, the application must be approved by the Park Authority Board of Trustees at one of its monthly meetings, thus requiring the appearance of the applicant at the meeting.

Certainly the most common and most popular type of reservation is the pavilion reservation, by which a park user may reserve one of the park’s seven pavilions for family, company, church or other kinds of gatherings.

The cost of reserving any of these pavilions is:

  • $60 for a half-day (from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., or from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.)
  • $90 for a full day (8 a.m. to 10 p.m.).
  • For “large” parties, a fee of $195 is added.

To make a pavilion reservation, interested parties should contact Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, either in person at 3383 South 300 East or by phone 801-483-5473, and specify the desired date and pavilion. The reservation permit will be issued after the appropriate fees are remitted.

All seven pavilions have the following amenities: lights and electricity, a fireplace, a drinking fountain, at least two barbeque stands, wood picnic tables, a volleyball court, and ample parking. Following are additional details on each of the seven pavilions at Sugar House Park:

  • Fabian Lakeside Pavilion – Located nearest to the pond and the sleigh-riding hill, the Fabian Lakeside Pavilion has 12 wood tables with a seating capacity of 256 people. Its parking lot has 55 parking stalls and a pay telephone.
  • Sugar Beet Pavilion – Located near the amphitheater in the southeast corner of the park, the Sugar Beet Pavilion also has 12 tables with a seating capacity of 256 people. Its parking lot, which is shared with the Hidden Grove Pavilion, has 60 parking stalls.
  • Hidden Grove Pavilion – Located across the creek from the basketball courts, the Hidden Grove Pavilion has the largest area of any of the seven terraces (2,254 square feet) and has a seating capacity of 234 people. It shares parking with the Sugar Beet Pavilion (60 stalls) and the basketball courts (26 stalls).
  • Big Field Pavilion – Located nearest the main soccer field at the end of the park’s inside road spur, the Big Field Pavilion has a seating capacity of 234 people and 54 parking stalls in its lot.
  • Parleys Creek Pavilion – Located near the children’s play area and the creek in the center of the park, the Parleys Creek Pavilion is the second largest (2,115 square feet) and has a seating capacity of 200 people. Its parking lot is the largest in the park with 78 stalls.
  • Sego Lily Pavilion – Located near the park’s southern fence line overlooking I-80, the Sego Lily Pavilion is the smallest in the park (along with the adjacent Mt. Olympus Pavilion) at 1,406 square feet, a seating capacity of 130 people, and a parking lot with 36 parking stalls.
