Interested parties may apply to hold a “special event” at Sugar House Park; some of the more common “special events” involve the use of the park road by not-for-profit groups for benefit runs or walks.

A “special event” is defined as involving any of the following:

  • 1, the use of an area greater than one terrace and its immediate surrounding area;
  • 2, the closing of any roadway in the park or restricting access to any area of the park during regular park hours; and
  • 3, the necessity for a Salt Lake City Special Events Permit for any “commercially related special event” or “advanced planned free expression activity.”

The fees for a special-event permit at Sugar House Park are as follows:

  • $195 for an event that involves from 0 to 999 people;
  • $500 for an event that involves animals or 1,000 or more people;
  • $90 for each terrace used for a full day (8 a.m. to 10 p.m.);
  • $60 for each terrace used for a half-day (8 a.m. to 2 p.m., or 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.);
  • $60 per terrace for previous-day event setup.
  • The Park Authority will set fees for an event that involves closure of the park road or restricting pedestrian access. Also, a non-refundable $20 fee is charged for each application.

The process for applying for a special-event permit is two-pronged:

  • 1, the applicant should contact Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation 801-483-5473 to obtain a Special Event Request Form for Sugar House Park, fill out the form and return it to County Parks;
  • 2, the applicant also must receive approval from the Sugar House Park Authority Board of Trustees, which requires an appearance before the board at one of its monthly meetings (the applicant must be placed on the board’s agenda prior to the meeting).
