This Week in the Park: Second Annual Mountain Valley Seed Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta

Saturday Oct 20th at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City.  It’s the Second Annual Mountain Valley Seed Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta brought to you by Muscle Milk.  Some of you might say…”but a regatta is a boat race” and you would be correct.  Don’t believe us check out this video of last year’s event.  Our partnership with the Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers has provided us with a large selection of 800+ lb pumpkins.  YES…pumpkins that are over 800 pounds, one of which is over 1400 lbs and all will be turned into Ginormous boats…and then raced in a pond.  Out of our minds???  Why…YES…yes we are.

The first question is…do pumpkins really float?  The second might be, who in their right mind would risk life and limb racing a pumpkin for prizes and fame?  The answers can be found at Sugar House Park from noon till 2:00 pm this Saturday.

Spectators can share in the fun and prizes from Muscle Milk, Whole Foods, Probar, Mountain Valley Seed Co and Park City Mountain Resort.  Come and see the latest edition Subaru from Nate Wade Subaru and spin the wheel of prizes from Chick-fil-A.

Muscle Milk will be providing samples of their muscle building, workout enhancing, shakes.  Muscle Milk® is a great-tasting, protein-enhanced functional formula that combines 32 grams of high-quality protein along with premium ingredients to provide sustained energy and recovery for performance and lifestyle.  Our pumpkins and our pumpkin captains end our workouts with Muscle Milk.

Whole Foods Sugar House will have regular sized pumpkins on hand.  Bring the kids and participate in a pumpkin carving contest for great prizes.  Carving starts at 10 and will be judged before the races end at 2.  Participants and winners could win gift certificates from Whole Foods to help complete their thanksgiving shopping.  There is nothing better than locally grown and certified organic options for your family this year and Whole Foods is the place to satisfy everyone’s tastes for all your classic fall baking needs.

ProBar will have delicious Gluten Free, all natural bars for the first 250 people at the event.  Probar is made from the healthiest ingredients on the planet and sooo dang good, you’ll forget all the other bars even existed.

For those of you counting the days till the snow flies, because we ARE…Park City Mountain Resort will be giving away lift passes to some attendees.  PCMR is the home of powder hounds whether they are on two sticks or one…with terrain and learn-to-ski packages for all abilities and the sickest board park in the state…we Ride Park City...and you should too.

Our friends from Wasatch Community Gardens will be helping out with growing tips and pumpkin related questions as well as showing off their very own Ginormous Pumpkin grown by their youth program.

As always we welcome you to visit us, ask questions, peek into our working greenhouse or our grow room and see what’s new.  We appreciate your ongoing business and desire to be more healthy, feed your family or save the world, even if it’s one Ginormous Pumpkin at a time.

Happy Rowing to all.  Here is how to get to Sugar House Park.

THIS WEEK IN THE PARK: Susan Sandoval “Run for Her Life” Ovarian Cancer Run

Run for her life

The Ovarian Cancer Research and Awareness Fund was created to increase awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors for ovarian cancer as well as other gynecologic cancers (uterine, cervix, vulvar, vaginal and fallopian tube.) The goals of the  researchers, physicians and fund are to educate and improve the care of women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers and focus on innovative research in the field of gynecologic cancers. Susan Sandoval was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer in May 2005 and died May 2007. She worked as a nurse at LDS and Primary Children’s hospitals for 21 years. She had many friends, talked passionately about patient care and rights, and had incredible strength within her to always look at the positive in life and make the best of every day.

The 2012 race will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Sugarhouse Park.  Family, friends and sponsors will join together, and we look forward to another successful day.  For questions on how to participate, volunteer, donate, or become a sponsor please contact Renee A. Chase, 801-585-0067 or renee.chase@hsc.utah.edu or go to http://medicine.utah.edu/obgyn/SSRun/index.htm.

Ovarian Cancer is the eighth most common cancer among women, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 22,430 new cases over ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in the United States during 2007. Ovarian cancer accounts for about 3% of all cancers in women.

In 2007, the Department of OB/GYN hosted the inaugural Susan Sandoval Run for Ovarian Cancer.  This event raised over $13,000 and had over 400 runners and walkers.  In 2008, with the help of our sponsors and participants, we raised over $10,000 and had over 300 runners and walkers.  Both 2009 and 2010 were banner years with over 500 participants each year.  To date, 2011 was our most successful year with over 600 participants, raising $24,000. Total monies raised over the past five years equals $85,000.  Many thanks to our sponsors, volunteers and participants who have contributed to each wonderful event, and help our researchers and physicians meet the goals of the fund to “find a cure”!

This Week in the Park: Wasatch Osteoporosis 5k & 1-mile Walk

2011 will be the inaugural year for the Wasatch Osteoporosis 5K and 1-Mile walk. We are very excited to join the campaign in raising awareness, promoting prevention, and encouraging treatment for osteoporosis in Utah. We hope to continue this tradition annually and expand our efforts to eventually include other distance races and events as well.

The race and walk will be held on October 22, 2011 and will start at 8am. It will be located at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City. Please register now and then join us on October 22, 2011 for the 5K race or come participate in the 1-mile walk if you are just getting started building healthy bones.

For more information: click here.

Wasatch Osteoporosis Race has been initiated with 3 primary goals in mind:

1) Raising Awareness of osteoporosis.
One of the first steps in impacting the community and inspiring Utah residents to address osteoporosis as a disease is education and broader understanding regarding the disease process itself and the health risks that osteoporosis poses.

2) Promoting Prevention of osteoporosis.
Very simple steps can be taken initially to start on the path to building healthier, stronger bones. One important, central first step is regular weight-bearing exercise. This can be something as simple as walking in your community or participating in events like the Wasatch Osteoporosis 5K race or 1-mile walk.

3) Encouraging Treatment of osteoporosis.
If your physician has diagnosed you with osteoporosis, medical or pharmacologic treatment may be appropriate even beyond lifestyle and diet choices and/or changes. Supplemental vitamin D and calcium as well as prescription medications at the direction of your physician may be required to treat osteoporotic bones.
