Park Authority Looking for New Board Member

The Sugar House Park Authority, a non-profit board of trustees responsible for overseeing the operation of Sugar House Park, is currently seeking one new board member to fill a four year term.  The Board is comprised of 9 members  (7 volunteers, one representative of Salt Lake City, and one representative of Salt Lake County).  Anyone that is passionate about the park, has time to give back to their local community, and cares about the future of the park should apply.  This is a great opportunity whether you are retired and looking for some way to still use your experience, or if you are just out of college and looking to get involved in the community.  The Board makes decisions on a wide range of topics, including special events in the park such as 5K fundraiser walks, the Fourth of July fireworks, park policies, and budgeting decisions.  The Board meets 10 times per year, on the second Thursday of every month. The Board does not meet in July and December.  The application deadline is March 30, 2012.

This Week in the Park: Wasatch Osteoporosis 5k & 1-mile Walk

2011 will be the inaugural year for the Wasatch Osteoporosis 5K and 1-Mile walk. We are very excited to join the campaign in raising awareness, promoting prevention, and encouraging treatment for osteoporosis in Utah. We hope to continue this tradition annually and expand our efforts to eventually include other distance races and events as well.

The race and walk will be held on October 22, 2011 and will start at 8am. It will be located at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City. Please register now and then join us on October 22, 2011 for the 5K race or come participate in the 1-mile walk if you are just getting started building healthy bones.

For more information: click here.

Wasatch Osteoporosis Race has been initiated with 3 primary goals in mind:

1) Raising Awareness of osteoporosis.
One of the first steps in impacting the community and inspiring Utah residents to address osteoporosis as a disease is education and broader understanding regarding the disease process itself and the health risks that osteoporosis poses.

2) Promoting Prevention of osteoporosis.
Very simple steps can be taken initially to start on the path to building healthier, stronger bones. One important, central first step is regular weight-bearing exercise. This can be something as simple as walking in your community or participating in events like the Wasatch Osteoporosis 5K race or 1-mile walk.

3) Encouraging Treatment of osteoporosis.
If your physician has diagnosed you with osteoporosis, medical or pharmacologic treatment may be appropriate even beyond lifestyle and diet choices and/or changes. Supplemental vitamin D and calcium as well as prescription medications at the direction of your physician may be required to treat osteoporotic bones.

Money raised is shared between the national organization and local Walk sites.

  • Advocating for the rights of people with hearing loss
  • Information, referral, education and coping resources through www.hearingloss.org, the Hearing Loss Magazine, the annual HLAA Convention, and the HLAA electronic newsletter
  • A nationwide network of 200 chapters providing personal support

  • Social networking site for young adults with hearing loss at www.hearinglossnation.org

  • Scholarships for students with hearing loss towards college tuition
  • Funding for hearing aids and devices for people who cannot afford them
  • Installation of hearing assistive technology in public places
  • Captioning of live theater productions
  • Seminars on coping with hearing loss for families

Why We Walk?
We walk because hearing loss is a public health issue in the United States.

  • 36 million people have some form of hearing loss
  • 22 million have noise-induced hear loss that could be prevented
  • More than 59,000 military members have disability status for hearing loss from current wars.
  • 30 school-aged children per 1,000 have a hearing loss

Most of us give little thought to our ears until we have a problem hearing. The sounds go into our ears and up to the brain and we hear. Unlike our eyes, our ears never close. Hearing is effortless. Many people don’t know where to find the information and support they need to overcome the communication obstacles that hearing loss creates.

People with a passion for hearing loss issues get involved for many reasons either they have a hearing loss themselves or they want to show support for family members or someone they know with hearing loss. Parents of children with hearing loss walk as families and meet other parents along the way and share experiences. Company teams walk to build workplace camaraderie. Alliance groups such as schools for children who have hearing loss, hospitals, universities, and other non-profit hearing loss-related organizations, join the Walk4Hearing to raise money for their own projects.
