Volunteers Helped to Grow Sugar House Park's Arboretum

Thank you to the ninety-six (96) volunteers who participated in Mulch Madness on Saturday, March 8, 2024.

Guided by arborists and staff from TreeUtah, volunteers at Mulch Madness were dispersed in smaller groups across the 110 acres of Sugar House Park to do sod removal at the base of trees and add a ring of mulch. Volunteers helped to grow the Sugar House Park arboretum by completing work on twenty-six of thirty-five species of trees. An arboretum tag was placed on each of the initial thirty-five species selected to submit for the minimum twenty-five species requirement for a Level 1 arboretum accreditation requirement.

The four-hour event began with a safety talk and demonstration of the proper way to remove sod that is safe for the tree roots. Volunteers came from as far away as Layton, Utah, and as close as students from Highland High School. The remaining trees will be completed by other volunteers of TreeUtah.
