After five months of construction, the newly built Fabian Lakeside Pavilion received a ribbon-cutting celebration on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. The pavilion, which was over 60 years old, is the first structure in Sugar House Park’s Pavilion Replacement Program, which will replace all seven park pavilions over the coming years.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony included remarks from Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson and Salt Lake City Council Member Sarah Young along with Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation Associate Director Patrick Leary, Salt Lake City Public Lands Director, Planning & Design Tom Millar, and Sugar House Park Authority President Holly Nichols. The event was covered by reporter Carter Williams of KSL.com. Read the article here.
Per a 1957 agreement, Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County are joint owners of Sugar House Park and equally fund capital improvement projects. Because of the staggered budget cycles, coordination over several years was necessary to fully fund the Fabian Lakeside Pavilion replacement.
Two more park pavilions are slated to be replaced in 2025 after the Salt Lake City Council directed $960,000 (or 50% of the funds) to the project in its latest capital improvement program budget which was adopted in August 2024. Salt Lake County has submitted its 2025 budget to the Mayor which will be sent to the County Council for review in hopefully adoption in December 2025. Sugar House Park Authority are working with both owners, Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City, to see the remaining four pavilions replaced.
Pavilion reservations open March 1 of every year for the reservation season between May 1 – September 30. Reservations can be made on slcoparks.com. To reserve a pavilion outside of the reservation season a Special Event Form is required.
Design was completed by Architectural Nexus, manufacturing of pavilion by Poligon, construction management by Crescent Construction, and project management by Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation.
